Learning outcomes

• Understand the definition and fundamental principles of palliative care (quality of life, early palliative care, and end-of-life care)
• Identify the different professional figures involved in palliative care
• Understand the complex palliative care needs of patients with oncological and non-oncological diseases
• Recognize the relational and communicative needs of the patient and the family
• Identify and manage pain, symptoms, and common conditions in patients with incurable diseases
• Recognize the bioethical implications related to the field of palliative care
• Understand the modes of communication with patients and families
• Understand the principles of listening as a basic principle of palliative care.

Course contents

Biomedical model and bio-psycho-social model in the helping relationship.

Disease-centered medicine and patient-centered medicine.

Communication techniques: advantages and limitations.

Communication of serious diagnosis and reactions of oncology patients.

Reactions and conflicts in both the physician and the patient; mental representation of oncological illness in the patient: anxiety, depression, resilience.

Medical Humanities.

Psychological support in processing suffering: end-of-life care and grieving process.
