Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will know the fundamental notions on nature-based solutions for the protection and sustainable management of water resources. In particular, the student will acquire knowledge relating to the sources and characteristics of water pollution, nature-based solutions for water retention, treatment of different types of wastewaters, as well as their potential reuse for irrigation purposes. Furthermore, the student will acquire basic knowledge on the sizing and design of constructed wetlands, as well as on the legislative framework and the requirements for the discharge and reuse of wastewater.
Course contents
- Water resources - climate change, water scarcity, water availability, sustainable management of water resources
- Water pollution - water quality parameters and characteristics of polluted waters (urban wastewater, agricultural drainage water and surface runoff, livestock wastewater), pollution of water bodies
- Treatment of polluted waters - basics on conventional treatment methods, natural treatment methods
- Natural wetlands - chemical, physical and biological processes, characteristics and role of vegetation, ecosystem services
- Nature-based solutions for water management - introduction, typology, functions (treatment and accumulation) and management aspects
- Nature-based solutions for water quality improvement - characteristics and applications of treatment systems, treatment processes, management and legislative aspects
- Nature-based solutions for water availability optimisation - storage/retention function, water balance, landscape aspects
- Design of nature-based solutions - process modeling, dimensioning, operating conditions
- Use of unconventional water resources - reuse of treated wastewater for irrigation purposes, legislative framework on a regional, national and international scale

Teaching methods
The course is divided into lectures and problem solving. Field visits are also planned.
Assessment methods
The final assessment of the course will be an oral exam.
This is a module of the integrated course and consequently, the final mark will be the average value of the two modules. The recording teacher is Prof. Maria Rosa Guerrieri.
