03467 - Endocrinology

Academic Year 2024/2025

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Dietistic (cod. 8470)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student knows the role of nutrition in specific endocrine pathologies (thyroid due to hypo- and hyperfunction; primary and secondary osteoporosis; hypercortisolism and metabolic effects of cortisol) and, vice versa, the effect of altered hormonal secretions on nutrition; he knows the role of hormones on the control of caloric intake, with particular reference to hypercortisolism by S. Cushing.

Course contents

Lectures are held frontally, with the use of slides updated with the latest guidelines.

In addition, biochemical and hormonal tests are illustrated to put theoretical teaching into practice. This happens for the main endocrinological pathologies from a epidemiologic point of view, such as primary diabetes or steroid-induced diabetes, alterations of thyroid functions, or alterations of calcium metabolism.

Readings/Bibliography

No texts are necessary, but it is important to follow the lectures. During each lesson, main Guidelines will be presented about each pathology. It's not necessary to know exactly the single therapies, but the physiologic mechanism the drus use.

Teaching methods

The course is divided into lectures, seminar activities and discussion. Lectures will be held in person or remotely depending on the indications of the academic bodies.

Students can follow the lessons with the teaching material uploaded on virtuale-unibo.

Assessment methods

The verification of learning takes place through an oral test in presence or remotely depending on the provisions of the academic bodies. The test aims to verify the student's knowledge of the subject which, together with his critical ability, will determine positive evaluations. Lack of orientation in the topics covered during the course, training gaps and inappropriate language will lead to negative evaluations.
