Course contents
The course will be divided in two parts: the first part will be centered around readings dealing with:
1: Geography and society of the People's Republic of China
2: politics and economy (one child policy, Chinese economic reform, socialism with Chinese characteristic),
3: Cultural issues (rites, hierarchies) and outline of the formal language
The course will focus on:
1: syntactic structures and Chinese lexicon, with a special focus on post
verbal complement and the ba constuction.
2: synonyms and language variation used for a particular purpose or in a particular social setting.
3: Characteristics of Chinese synonyms.
The second part will focus on the translation of excerpts taken from various Chinese books dealing topics discussed during the course. The translation exercises aim at
1: encouraging the students to analyze the key elements of Chinese discourse and fundamental information structure of a written text.
2: strengthening students' syntactic skills.
Students are required to attend all the lessons of the Chinese language experts, which are totally 40 hours.
In any case, class attendance is mandatory and students must have total of class attendance at least of 70% or greater.

Assessment methods
The final exam consists of two part: the first is a translation of a brief text whose content will be in line with all those analyzed during the course; there will also be grammar exercises and exercises dealing with synonyms. Students are allowed to consult the dictionary when translating the text.
The second part is a conversation about all the texts studied during the course. The evaluation will take into account students' reading skills, pronunciation, tones, and syntactic structures.
