Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student: - knows the various causes and forms of social distress and the complexity of the variables that determine it; - knows the institutions and public and private actors that intervene on the phenomenon in question and the methods of intervention; - knows the conceptual and analytical tools for the study of the Welfare State, knows its evolution, consolidation, and crisis; - knows the types of Welfare State: the Welfare models and regimes, the differences that characterize the various Welfare and the impact on the quality of life of citizens; - it knows the external and internal constraints and challenges of the Welfare system and social policy interventions; - can plan social and educational interventions, in collaboration with the various professional figures and services present in the territory; - can engage at the local level in the planning of services.

Course contents

The following topics will be covered during the course:

- welfare theories

- the welfare model during the Golden Age

- current trajectories of change

- new social risks

- selected areas of social policy intervention (e.g., poverty policies, housing policies, education-to-work transition support policies, work-family reconciliation policies, long-term care policies, immigration policies, active labor policies, and lifelong learning policies).

The required readings (no distinction between attending and non-attending students) are:

- One reading of choice from a selection of texts (the list will be available on the Virtual Learning Platform at the beginning of the course).

 

 

Teaching methods

The teaching methods will include lectures, seminars, and in-class discussions. The teaching materials used (slides, in-depth readings, etc.) will be made available to all students, both attending and non-attending, via the university's Virtual Learning Platform.

Assessment methods

The exam consists of a written test with three open-ended questions to be completed in one hour. The purpose of the exam is to assess both the acquisition of the knowledge covered in the course and the ability to apply it critically.

Specifically, the criteria for evaluating students’ performance will include:

- relevance to the question asked;

- detailed knowledge of the content and understanding of the texts;

- correct use of sociological language;

- logical consistency in structuring responses;

- reflective re-elaboration of the studied content.
