Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student is expected to possess a basic knowledge of the main classes of functional and structural materials, their properties and applications.
Course contents
Introduction.
Diffusion mechanisms. Overview of mechanical properties.
Phase diagrams (two and three components).
Scientific literature: how to read a paper; articles for lab experiences.
Ceramic materials: (1) Structure and properties. (2) Synthesis methods: solid-state, solution, sol-gel, melt (oxide glasses), vapour pahse.
Laboratory experiences: (1) Scheelite. (2) Fluoro-perovskites with transition metal ions. (3) Ferrofluids. (4) Superconductor. (5) Liquid crystals.
