Learning outcomes

To acquire the knowledge and the ability to understand electrophysiological changes during Neurosurgery interventions.

Course contents

- Usefulness of the neurophysiopathology methods applied in neurosurgery: history, clinical impact, future perspectives

- Somatosensory evoked potentials (by stimulation of median nerve, of posterior tibial nerve, technical variables, applicability, warning criteria, phase reversal)

- Motor evoked potentials (transcranial electrical stimulation - TES; single-stimulus technique - eMEPs; stimulus-train technique -mMEPs; combined use eMEP / mMEPs; warning criteria; direct cortical stimulation techniques)

- Acoustic evoked potentials (generators, pathophysiology of intraoperative modifications, auditory function monitoring)

- Other methods (EMG free run, triggered EMG, nerve action potential, brainstem mapping, non-selective spinal cord stimulation methods)

- Hypothesis of intraoperative protocols (spinal surgery, subtentorial surgery, supratentorial surgery)

Assessment methods

The final course exam aims to assess the achievement of the learning objectives:

- Understanding the intraoperative monitoring techniques

- Understanding the awake surgery and deep brain stimulation techniques.

The Module is part of the Integrated Course, for which a written exam with 36 multiple-choice questions (only one correct answer) is planned as the evaluation method. There will be 6 questions for each Module of the Integrated Course. Each question is worth 1 point. Correctly answering all 36 questions is required to achieve honors.

The date of the written exam will be set by the coordinator of the Integrated Course (Prof. Pizza).

The exam will take place at the 1st floor, Building G, Bellaria Hospital.
