Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will have a basic knowledge of electricity and magnetism, of oscillation phenomena, of atomic and nucleus structure and of the method for the production and consumption of energy. He will be able to use Physics to understand environmental problems, to operate in a laboratory and to work with experimental data.
Course contents
Electricity and magnetism: electric charge, electric circuits, magnets, magnetic induction. Thermodynamics: Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, mean free path, transport properties of momentum, mass and energy; heat transmission; thermal and refrigerating machines. Mechanical oscillations. Wave phenomena: waves in matter, Maxwell's equations and electromagnetic waves, interference and diffraction, quanta of light. Atomic structure and spectral lines. Structure of the atomic nucleus. Radioactive phenomena. Interaction of radiation with matter. Energy production and consumption. Renewable energies.
Module "Phyisics Laboratori 2": Measurement of a physical quantity. Units of measurement and measuring instruments. , Measurement errors. Systematic and random errors. Absolute and relative errors. Error propagation. Significant figures and rounding. , Statistical analysis of random errors. Mean and standard deviation. The standard error of the mean. , Histograms and distributions. The normal distribution and its properties. , Interpolation of data with a curve. The least squares method. Linear and polynomial interpolation. Covariance and correlation. , Carrying out in the laboratory of simple experiments, which involve the measurement of various physical quantities, the subsequent processing of the collected data and the drafting of a written report.
