Learning outcomes
The goal is to be able to reconstruct the spatial continuity of the territory starting from the discrete data of the same territory. Such continuity will have to meet the actual features (eg geomorphologic) of the territory. Methods that use interpolation processes based on statistical analysis will be proposed. We will work on data captured with geomatics and software on OpenSurce GIS platforms.
Course contents
The lectures is divided into 3 parts where the first involves the acquisition of competences in the use of some statistical tools (frequency distributions, statistical indices, variables and statistical inference), the second one is to provide students with Tools for description, interpretation and control of data by using open-surce software (QuantumGIS, GRASS, SAGA GIS) and the third part concerns the application of methods for predicting and interpolating data.

Teaching methods
The course includes frontal lectures and collective exercises in the didactic lab. At the beginning of the course the teacher will provide all the information necessary for the final examination, bibliography and the development of the didactic program.
Attending students are required to have an attendance of no less than 80% of the expected hours.
This course is not recommended for non-attending students.
Assessment methods
ATTENDING AND NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS
The learning will be verified with an oral exam through which the level of knowledge achieved by the student will be verified, in relation to the topics covered during the course. During the exam, the personal exercise that each student will necessarily have to carry out beforehand in full autonomy will also be discussed on the basis of the guidelines provided by the teacher during the course and also present in the "Virtual" application. It should be noted that the exam methods will be the same both for attending students and for NON-attending students.
The evaluation criteria that will contribute to determining the final grade will be:
1) the degree of knowledge, depth and critical understanding of the contents;
2) the ability to argue, to establish relationships between topics and to apply theoretical principles to real cases;
3) the ability to present using appropriate basic technical terminology;
4) the robustness of the reasoning in evaluating the result obtained in completing the exercise.
The grade will be assigned based on the following rating scale:
18-21: sufficient performance;
22-24: fair performance;
25-27: good performance;
28-29: very good performance;
30: excellent performance;
30 cum laude: excellent performance.
Teaching tools
PowerPoint projection, PC and software for displaying and analyzing simple data, that will be provided by the teacher.
