Learning outcomes
By attending this course, the student is able to possess the fundamental knowledge on Transportation Systems Engineering. He knows the main mathematical models for simulating transport supply. He knows the mechanics of locomotion of road and rail vehicles, the main functional characteristics of urban public transport systems and railway transport system. He is able to set the design of a line of mass transport in urban areas.

Requirements/Prior knowledge
Fluent spoken and written Italian is a necessary pre-requisite: all lectures and tutorials and all study material will be in Italian.
Course Contents
Transport Systems. Urban public transportation. Systems and technology
Network and zoning systems: zoning design and network representation. Elements of demand estimation. Elements of assignment methods for uncongested networks (AoN model).
Elements of mechanics of rail and road vehicles
Cycling mobility. Elements for and against the spread of the use of cycling. Manual and automated bicycle counting both on- and off-street. Big data (GPS) and cycling.
Methods for choosing between alternative transportation projects
Exercises
The course involves the drafting of a project for a collective transport service in an urban context. For the preparation of the project, the students are gathered in groups of no more than five students: each group must prepare a paper which is subjected to revisions by a tutor. The methodological guide for drafting the project consists of lessons held in the classroom and checks by the tutors of the proposed design solutions.

Teaching methods
The course will include lectures and exercises.
Assessment methods
Achievements will be assessed by the means of a final written exam. This is based on an analytical assessment of the "expected learning outcomes" described above. Before the exam, the project must be reviewed and endorsed by the tutor. The final mark is obtained considering the result of the written exam and the valuation result of the project.
Higher grades will be awarded to students who demonstrate an organic understanding of the subject, a high ability for critical application, and a clear and concise presentation of the contents. To obtain a passing grade, students are required to at least demonstrate a knowledge of the key concepts of the subject, some ability for critical application, and a comprehensible use of technical language. A failing grade will be awarded if the student shows knowledge gaps in key-concepts of the subject, inappropriate use of language, and/or logic failures in the analysis of the subject.
