Learning outcomes

The students will be expected to have a good knowledge of discourse strategies and will be able to apply these skills to text-analysis and translation. Through practical exercises, their communicative competencies in all the abilities, active and passive, will reach a C2 level of the European Common Framework which will provide them with sufficient skills to effectively interpret socio-linguistic and cultural codes of people involved in a communicative rapport.

Course contents

The course aims, on the one hand, to integrate linguistic refinement and the study of complex grammatical structures typical of written registers; on the other hand, the course aims to train skills in reading, comprehension and composition in specialised fields. To this end, texts from various specialised fields (scientific articles, technical reports, news articles and others) will be studied. For each text, the linguistic aspects, disciplinary content and communicative perspectives will be emphasised through the use of tools from grammatical analysis, scientific research and discourse criticism.

The Chinese texts to be translated and analysed will be available on the course page on Virtuale.


During the course, the lectures will be supplemented by academic essays also published on Virtuale: these essays can be prepared for active intervention in the lectures.

Frontal lessons and tutorials, with active student participation.

Assessment methods

The examination has a written part and an oral part. It consists of two parts of 30/30 each. The written part accounts for 70%, the oral part accounts for 30%.

1. Written exam: translation from Chinese into Italian of a passage not presented during the course. Paper and digital dictionaries can be used in the exam.

The examination is marked by subtracting 1 point for each incorrect/untranslated sentence; 0.5 for each incorrect/untranslated grammatical structure (complements, particles, etc.); 0.25 for each incorrectly translated word.

2. Oral examination:

The test focuses on the ability to read, comprehend and comment in Chinese on the texts read and discussed in class. Ten points will be awarded for each of the three parts. For reading, 1 point is deducted for every 5 pronunciation errors. 

It is possible to take each part in different exam sessions, provided that it is taken within a year.
