Learning outcomes

The course aims at introducing students to political history of European and not European Countries (XIX-XX centuries). At the end of the course student will have a fundamental knowledge about Contemporary History; he will be able to analyse critically historical problems and developments; he will have the skill to analyse the events of contemporary age in the framework of historical development

Course contents

TThe course analyzes the evolution of contemporary history along a chronological span from the revolutions of the late eighteenth century to the present time with a prevalent focus on the centuries in which modernity was shaped namely the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The analysis of historical phenomena will follow a comparative approch and will focus on the 'historical evolution of the main European countries (Italy, France, Great Britain, Germany and Russia) and the Euro-American area. The course will trace the main events by following the dynamics of the development and crisis and establishment of democracy as a political system and as an ideology. Special attention will be paid to the crisis of political systems and the rise of fascist dictatorships in the period between the two World Wars. Among the topics that will be developed in class:

-Historical concepts and their definition
-Political ideologies-The eighteenth-century revolutions
-The Restoration
-The 1848
-The formation of national states late comers (Italy and Germany) and their evolution
-The evolution of the political systems of France and Great Britain
-The United States as a global power
-Colonialism
-The rise of dictatorships between the two world wars
-The Cold War
The concrete articulation of the course will be indicated in class.

Assessment methods

1 ) Assesment methods for students that attend the class
Students should enroll for the mid term and the final exam during the first 5 meetings of the course. Students are exptected to attend the curse regularly (more information will be given at the beginning of the course). If you need more information contact theacer during his office hours
Students will take a mid tem exam and final exam that consists in a test about general history. If students pass this test, they must take an oral examination. Subject of the oral examination will be the book selected by students in the hort list. More details on the test for the students that attend tha class will be given during the course. Foreign students that are intended to attend the course should talk with the teacher during his office hours. Final mark: 50% General History 50% oral examination on the monograhical part.

Each answer in the written part for Not attending stwill be awarded a mark from 0 to 1. No penalty will be given for incorrect answers

2) Assessment methods Students that take examination without attending the class.
Students must take an examination divided in two parts. For the first part (general history) students must pass a written (in case of health emergency oral) and an oral examination. For the second part Students must take an oral exam in which students will discuss the book that they have chosen in the long list .
Final mark: 50% General History 50% oral examination on the monographie

Each answer in the written part for Not attending stwill be awarded a mark from 0 to 1. No penalty will be given for incorrect answers.

General criteria

The achievement of an organic vision of the themes tackled, the possession of a mastery of expression and specific language, the mastery of concepts, the structural and historical-causal understanding of events as well as familiarity with the tools of analysis of contemporary history will be assessed with marks of excellence. A largely mechanical or mnemonic knowledge of the subject, an inadequate ability to summarise and analyse, or language which is correct but not always appropriate, as well as a scholastic command of contemporary history will lead to fair marks. Inadequate training or inappropriate language, as well as a lack of knowledge and understanding of contemporary history will lead to grades that are on the threshold of sufficiency. Formative deficiencies, inappropriate language, lack of orientation within the spatiotemporal dimension will lead to negative marks.
