Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student. - is able to conduct a field research in order to investigate social characteristics and needs in view of a specific intervention - is able to describe the social characteristics of administrative areas (regions, provinces, municipalities) using official statistical sources.

Course contents

Introduction to statistics, population and sample, variability.

Types of variables, data collection and management.

Descriptive statistic. Frequency distributions.

Position indexes (mode, median, centiles, mean)

Variation indexes (variance, standard deviation, range, interquartile range)

Graphic representations, two way tables.

The diagnostic test (sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV)

Measures of association (correlation, linear regression)

Probability, probability distributions, statistical inference, hypothesis testing, confidence interval.

Population studies and clinical trials, epidemiologic indicators: incidence, prevalence, risk
