Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will possess adequate knowledge of inorganic systems, both as molecules and as extended solids, with focus on structure-properties relationship. The student will have basic knowledge of elements and their inorganic compounds.
Course contents
Introduction - Metallic and molecular solids. Close packing. Ionic solids: types and stability. Lattice enthalpies. Born-Haber cycle. Redox potentials - The Nernst equation - Frost, Latimer and Pourbaix diagrams - Ellingham diagrams - corrosion in metals - Periodic properties of the elements. Elements and compounds: groups 1-2 and 13-18. The d-block elements. Properties and applications of inorganic compounds and solids as typical and advanced materials.
