Learning outcomes
Students will acquire notions about the molecular genetics of model systems such as M. musculus and H. sapiens and the molecular methods to analyze DNA and RNA and generate mutants through gene inactivation and transgenesis.
Course contents
The course provides knowledge of modern molecular genetics approaches to analyze gene function in vivo, using model organisms. These approaches allow exploring the function of a specific gene in different tissues and cell types using mutations or inducing genetic manipulation. Furthermore, the use of molecular genetics techniques in the study of gene interactions with the aim to understand molecular mechanisms underlying biological processes will also be presented.

The course consists of 5 CFU of lectures and 1 CFU of lab activities. During the lectures the contents of the program will be illustrated using PowerPoint slides. The laboratory activities will focus on the use of methods to study gene expression.

Assessment methods
Oral exam to evaluate 1) the student’s knowledge of the contents developed during the course and 2) the student’s ability to interconnect the different topics.
