Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student achieves a first level of competence in the Spanish language.
Course contents
The course aims to develop the language skills of comprehension and expression necessary to interact, in written and oral form, in communicative contexts of personal and academic life.
By the end of the course, students will have reached a level of A2 proficiency in Spanish, which will enable them to:
1. Understand and produce simple sentences in Spanish related to the basic needs of personal and academic life;
2. Read, analyse, summarise, understand and explain the explicit information of texts in Spanish related to the language, customs, history and social codes of the Spanish-speaking world;
3. Produce short texts - written and oral - related to the language, customs, history and social codes of the Spanish-speaking community.
The contents will be approached from a sociolinguistic perspective, with particular emphasis on the diatopic variation that characterises the current Spanish-speaking world.
The second part of the course will focus on themes related to language and culture in Latin America, through the reading and commentary of different text types (short essays, articles, literary passages, music lyrics and oral texts from audiovisuals).
Aspects of anthropological interest will be emphasised and a decolonial perspective will be adopted.

Teaching methods
The lectures will be held with a communicative approach, in a dynamic and interactive mode, and mostly in Spanish. Attending students are invited to actively participate and intervene during the lessons, in order to practise language production, both individually and as part of the exercises in pairs and groups that will be proposed.
Assessment methods
The final examination consists of two tests: one written and one oral.
Both tests are evaluated on a 30. The final examination mark will result from the arithmetic average of the results of the written test and the oral test.
Written exam
The written examination will be designed to test mastery of the Spanish language at the level required by the course. To this end, the written test will consist of exercises relating to the different skills of comprehension, written production and grammar exercises (blanks, verbs conjugation, etc.).
The written examination is preparatory to the oral examination. It is therefore necessary to have passed the written examination with a mark of at least 18/30 to take the oral examination.
Oral exam
The oral examination is aimed at testing the knowledge acquired during the course, through the commentary of some of the texts analysed in class during the lectures, and the ability to succinctly and critically present the topics addressed in the second module, on the basis of the contents of the bibliography and the teaching materials provided.
Assessment will therefore be based on
- ability to comment orally, in Spanish, on the selected texts, i.e. the ability to identify, translate and contextualise them historically and culturally;
- mastery of the contents;
- ability to synthesise and analyse themes and concepts;
- ability to express oneself adequately in Spanish and with the appropriate language.

There are no differences in syllabus or examination methods between attending and non-attending students.
No language certificate obtained exempts students from taking the examination.

The texts in the bibliography will be supplemented with a wide variety of other materials (audiovisual, press, extracts from literary, artistic, musical texts), made available on Virtuale during the course.
