Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students attain a knowledge (morpho-syntactic and lexical) of French corresponding to level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Course contents
The course will be divided into two interconnected parts: the presentation of basic grammar topics and activities aimed at the acquisition of communicative skills.
1) Grammar:
In this part of the course, hints on phonetics will be given and the main grammatical topics useful to obtain the A2 level will be presented: articles and partitives, the main simple and articulated prepositions, the French verbal system, the main regular and irregular verbs, verbal modes and tenses, the interrogative and negative forms, the formation of the feminine and plural of nouns and adjectives, possessive adjectives and pronouns, demonstrative adjectives and pronouns, verbal periphrases to express the future and the past, simple and compound relative pronouns, the main conjunctions and adverbs.
2) Communication: acquisition of vocabulary related to everyday life useful for introducing oneself, giving and asking for personal information and describing situations of common life: numbers, time, date, days, months, seasons, family vocabulary, names of countries and languages, nationality adjectives, names of body parts and adjectives to describe people, vocabulary of food, meals and activities of daily routine.

Teaching methods
The lessons will consist of a part of frontal explanation of the grammar topics and a part of the students' performance and correction of grammar exercises.
In the classroom, reading of short texts in the language, watching videos and listening to short audio documents in the language will be proposed for comprehension and commentary exercises.
Guided dialogue and oral production activities will be proposed to help students develop the communicative skills required by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages for level A2.
Class attendance is strongly recommended. Non-attending students should consult all materials made available on the course virtual page.

Assessment methods
The examination will consist of two parts, a written test and an oral test.
WRITTEN TEST:
The written test will last 1 hour and will include grammar exercises and five sentences to be translated to test the learning of vocabulary and idiomatic expressions.
N. B The oral test may only be taken by those who have passed the written test with a minimum score of 18/30.
ORAL TEST
The oral test consists of a short personal presentation and a dialogue with the teacher aimed at testing the learner's communicative skills and ability to answer simple questions on topics of everyday life. The learner will be asked to speak in the present, past and future tense and to use the vocabulary and idiomatic expressions learnt during the course. The grade will be expressed in thirtieths according to this guideline scheme:
EXCELLENT
(28-30 cum laude)
Excellent ability to orientate oneself in the topics covered in class
Lexical richness and knowledge of idiomatic expressions in French, relative to the level of competence of the course and the vocabulary presented in class.
Grammatical correctness and excellent pronunciation.
DISCRETE
(24-27)
Mechanical knowledge of the subject matter.
Good grammatical correctness and adequate pronunciation.
Limited ability to express oneself in French, good command of basic vocabulary.
SUFFICIENT
(18-23)
Minimal knowledge of examination material.
Poor knowledge of vocabulary and idiomatic expressions.
Poor ability to use the French language, comprehensible pronunciation that does not impede effective communication.
Sufficient knowledge of fundamental grammatical topics.
NEGATIVE
Lack of knowledge of basic grammatical topics.
Lack of knowledge of vocabulary and idiomatic expressions, inadequate or incomprehensible pronunciation.
Lack of ability to use the French language.
There are no differences in syllabus or examination methods between attending and non-attending students.
No language certificate obtained exempts students from taking the examination.
