Learning outcomes

At the end of the module, the student possesses knowledge, within their scope, related to the field of pathophysiology and clinical aspects of otorhinolaryngological diseases in both pediatric and adult patients; understands the basics of functional and instrumental semiotics, as well as the methodology and treatment in otorhinolaryngology, with particular attention to emergency pathologies.

Course contents

Anatomy and physiology of the ear. Otoscopy and otoendoscopy. Classification of hearing loss.

Instrumental diagnostics: subjective, objective audiometry. Infant audiometry.

Pathologies of the external ear. Middle ear disorders: acute and chronic otitis media, cholesteatoma, otosclerosis. Surgical techniques: myringoplasty, tympanoplasty, ossiculoplasty, stapedioplasty.

Vestibology: anatomy-physiology. Clinical and instrumental semeiotics. Diagnosis and therapy.

Hearing loss in children: classification, classification, diagnosis, rehabilitation. Cochlear implants: indications, surgical technique. Neonatal auditory screening.

Anatomy and physiology of the paranasal sinuses. Inflammatory pathology of the nose and paranasal sinuses. Naso-sinus polyposis. Epistaxis.

Skull base: anatomy. Pathologies of interest ENT of the anterior and lateral skull base. Surgical techniques.

Benign and malignant tumors of the paranasal sinuses.

Anatomy and physiology of the pharynx. Acute and chronic tonsillitis. Tonsillectomy.

Anatomy and physiology of the larynx. Chordal paralysis. Benign and malignant pathologies of the larynx.

Surgery of the larynx: cordectomies, reconstructive and total laryngectomies.

Assessment of dyspnoea. Tracheotomy.

Neck anatomy. Lymph node levels. Diagnostics of neck masses. Laterocervical lymph node emptying.

Major salivary glands: inflammatory pathologies, tumors and surgical approaches
