Learning outcomes
The course of Hygiene and Infectious Diseases will supply the students with the basic principles about the general and applied hygiene and about general and specific knowledge of clinical syndromes sustained by infectious agents. In detail, the students will learn the basic principles regarding etiology, epidemiology, clinical manifestation, diagnosis and therapy of infectious diseases, with particular reference to the infectious illnesses related to their next profession.

Introduction to the Infectious Diseases: actual and future scenario, the global challenges, the diagnostic approach, the principles of Pathogenesis and the route of transmission.
The Healthcare associated Infections from the clinical perspective.
The severity of Infections, the concept of Sepsis and Septic Shock: definition, diagnosis and epidemiology.
Principles of microbiological diagnosis.
Principles of antimicrobial therapy.
Vascular catheter-related infections.
Infective Endocarditis.
Osteoarticular Infections.
Meningitis and other Central Nervous Sistem Infections.
Infective diarrhea.
Urinary tract Infections.
Skin and soft tissues Infections.
Respiratory Infections, focus on Pneumonia.
Tuberculosis.
Fever in the returning traveller.
Vector-borne infections.
The Infections in the immunocompromised host.

Teaching methods
All course topics will be presented by frontal lessons and studied in depth by open debates.
Assessment methods
The assessment examination will be performed by a written test including multiple-choice questions in the context of the Integrated Course of Public Health Sciences.
A total of 64 questions, to be completed in 1 hour, divided in:
24 questions for Hygiene and Infectious Diseases
16 questions for General and Clinical Microbiology
8 questions for Occupational Medicine
8 questions for Forensic Medicine
8 questions for Radioprotection
To pass the exam it is necessary to answer correctly to al least 36 questions (to obtain 18/30).
