Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide the chemical knowledge necessary to understand the properties and behavior of the materials involved in the main production processes, and to understand the effects of these latter on the environment.
Course contents
Atomic structure of matter. Electronic structure of atoms; periodic table of the elements and periodic properties. Chemical bonds: ionic, covalent and metallic bonds. Weak interactions. Molecular structure and polarity of molecules. Nomenclature of inorganic compounds. Chemical reactions, redox and stoichiometry. States of matter: gases, liquid and solid state. Solutions and measures of concentration. Chemical thermodynamics and chemical equilibrium. Fundamentals of chemical kinetics. Phase equilibria: Gibbs' rule and one and two component state diagrams. Ionic equilibria in aqueous solutions. Acids and bases and pH determination.
Fundamentals of organic chemistry: main functional groups in organic chemistry. Polymeric materials: polymerization reactions; classes of polymers: thermoplastics, thermosets, elastomers; thermal and mechanical properties of polymers. Polymers from renewable sources. Metallic materials: Production of steels and cast irons; Iron-Carbon state diagram; Heat treatments of steels and mechanical performance; non-ferrous metal alloys.
Readings/Bibliography
It is recommended to use the teaching material and lesson notes (https://virtuale.unibo.it/).
As a supplement to the study it is recommended:
- for the theoretical part of chemistry
R.A. Michelin, A. Munari - " Fondamenti di Chimica ", Casa Editrice Ambrosiana, Milano, 2019. - for the theoretical part of materials
W.F. Smith, J. Hashemi Scienza e tecnologia dei materiali. McGraw-Hill - for the exercises
R.A. Michelin, P. Sgarbossa, M. Mozzon, A. Munari - "CHIMICA, Test ed Esercizi", Casa Editrice Ambrosiana, Milano, 2018.
Teaching methods
The course is based on frontal lessons, carried out in the classroom, supported by the projection of PowerPoint presentations.
Guided exercises will be carried out on the various topics of the program which will be similar in type and difficulty to those proposed during the exam.
Assessment methods
The final exam, which is a written test lasting 2 hours without the help of notes or books, and any type of electronic device (excluding the calculator).
The written test consists of multiple choice and open theory questions, and exercises on the topics covered in class.
To take the exam, you must register via AlmaEsami, within the deadlines indicated. It is necessary to show up at the exam site with an identity document or university badge, under penalty of exclusion from the test.
Teaching tools
Lectures with the aid of a video projector and blackboard, supported by the presentation of PowerPoint slides which can be downloaded in PDF format (https://virtuale.unibo.it/) before the start of each lesson.
