Learning outcomes

The course starts off on the knowlwdge of European and especially Italian art between IV and XV century. At the end of the course the student has the instruments to understand the style and the iconography of the work with especial attention to its historical context.

Course contents


The course will be developed in two parts by Proff. Silvia Pasi and Raffaellla Pini.

The first part will be addressed to the study and the foundamental lines of the art history in Italy from V century to the Romanesque, an the second from the Gothic to the Renaissance an will concern the following subjects:

- Art in Ravenna from Galla Placidia to the exarchate

- Longobard, Carolingian and Ottonian Art

- The big building sites of the Romanesque

- Gothic architecture: the French and Italian cathedrals

- Italian sculpture in the Pisano's age

- Painting renewal: Cimabue and Giotto

- The Senesi: Duccio, Simone Martini, Pietro and Ambrogio Lorenzetti

- Birth and spreading of the International Gothic

- Birth of the Renaissance: Brunelleschi, Masaccio and Donatello

- Spreading of the Renaissance in Italy and theFlemish

- Mature Renaissance in Italian courts: Urbino, Rimini, Mantova and Ferrara

Integral and foundamental parts of the course will be some thematic excurtions forseen during the lessons in Ravenna (Mausoleo detto di Galla Placidia, Battistero Neoniano, Battistero degli Ariani, S. Apollinare Nuovo) and in Bologna (Church of St. Petronio, National Pinacothek).

For students with12 CFU
In addition to the study of the manuals, is required the study of an argument to agree with the teacher.

Assessment methods


The examination will consist of an oral conversation where the student will exsplain the knowlwdges learned by the study of the text books.

Teaching tools


Le lessons holded in the lecture room will be supported by the help of visual material. However the lessons in situ are fundamental, to study directly some of the works trated in the lecture room.
