Laurea (First cycle degree/Bachelor - 180 ECTS) in Fashion Cultures and Techniques

The 1st cycle degree programme prepares students to deal with the main issues that arise today in the Fashion industry, above all as regards theory, though the basic practical notions of the sector will also be taught. Given the proportions and multiple implications of this field, the programme prepares students to address not only cultural problems but also technological and productive issues. It also aims to give them a creative attitude and skills suitable for application in the field of fashion and design. The objective is to teach students the basics of fashion, along with specific tools for studying a chosen area in depth. The rich array of subjects available will allow students to familiarise themselves with ideas which they will be able to refine and expand on, drawing on many diverse fields of knowledge, the world of fashion being likewise multiple and diverse. This may lead to employment in various fields connected with communication in fashion, as well as archiving and promotion of fashion products, organising events, etc.. The jobs for which this degree programme prepares include production, distribution, programming, development and presentation of fashion products.

The programme combines specific knowledge with a sound preparation in the arts in general. It supplies students with the basic tools needed to communicate the results of their knowledge in traditional and more modern forms.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

Graduates:

- will possess basic historical and critical knowledge in the visual arts, literature, history, design and photography;

- will possess in-depth knowledge of fashion history and critique , as regards both the theoretical and technical/operational aspects of the sector.

Such knowledge and understanding will be achieved through attending lectures, practical activities, workshops, seminars and hours of home study as demanded by the course units.

Assessment will be mainly through exams and/or intermediate tests (oral and/or written exams, tests, oral presentations).

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:

Graduates:

- will know how to contextualise documents and objects relating to costume and fashion and to recognise the core features of style throughout the various ages;

- will possess the basic knowledge pertaining to work organisation and its economic processes and will know how to operate effectively in the productive chain of the fashion sector.

The ability to apply such knowledge and understanding will form through critical reading of texts set for home study and prompted by classroom activities.

Assessment is mainly through exams and/or intermediate tests (oral and/or written exams, tests, oral presentations).

MAKING JUDGEMENTS:

Graduates:

- will know how to analyse the fashion system and its operations and will have the cognitive tools to grasp the relations between productive activity in the fashion sector and the territorial context they refer to (local, decentralised and international), and likewise between fashion objects and their cultural worth;

- will know the creative process and communication strategies (advertising campaigns, and rudiments of marketing and merchandising);

- will know how to implement processed strategies and assist the planning teams in design and visual merchandising.

Judgement skills are developed and assessed especially via practical activities, organised seminars, internships, preparation of reports and an assigned task leading towards the final paper.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

Graduates:

- will know how to match their communication to the various contexts and interlocutors – in Italian and at least one other language of the European Union (at least at Level B1);

- will know how to write an effective documented text pertaining to fashion, and prepare sector documents (written and visual);

- will know how to write summaries towards preparation of statements.

Written and oral communication skills are especially developed during seminars, workshops and practical tasks, and are assessed during each exam.

LEARNING SKILLS:

Graduates:

- will be capable of self-training, will be able to relate and interact with mixed interlocutors, in various languages and contexts, orally, in writing and using images;

- will know the Italian world of fashion and taste and know how to relate it to other contexts and sectors;

- will know how to relate and interact with the creative and productive processes of design.

Learning skills are acquired by the student and assessed thoughout the degree programme; home study is vital before taking each exam, as well as preparing individual and/or group projects and tasks towards the final examination.
