Laurea (First cycle degree/Bachelor - 180 ECTS) in Orthoptics and Assistance in Ophthalmology (for certified professional orthoptists and assistants in ophthalmology)

Based on physician prescriptions, orthoptics and ophthalmic assistance graduates treat motor and sensory anomalies of vision and perform ophthalmo-diagnostic instrumental procedures. They will perform rehabilitation treatment and oversee non-surgical and surgical strabismus treatment.

- will be familiar with the basic elements of anatomophysiology of the visual system, ocular motility and binocular vision, as well as the principles of visual psychophysics, psychology and psychopathology;
- will be familiar with the principles of physiology of visual function, ocular motility and mono and binocular vision, general orthoptics, semiotics and orthoptic methods; in addition, will have knowledge of the general and applicative notions pertaining to the problems linked to refractive errorsand their correction;
- will be familiar with techniques of ophtalmological and orthoptic instrumental diagnosis, methods of functional re-education, orthoptic rehabilitative treatments and specific clinical relations; in addition will know the basics of contact lenses fitting;
- will be familiar with methods, techniques and use of devices for orthoptic rehabilitation for ocular motility anomalies and mono-binocular vision in the developing age, in adults and the elderly, as well as the principles and techniques of re-education of the handicaps of visual functions; in addition, will master the principles of ocular pharmacology, hygiene, legal medicine and psychopathological principles;
- will be familiar with diagnostic (perimetery, corneal topography, fluorangiography, electrophysiology, etc.), methods, techniques, devices for visual, orthoptic and low vision re-education and rehabilitation in the developing age, in adults and in the elderly;
- will be familiar withthe principles of law, ethics and deontology governing the profession;
The overall objective of the Course is to teach students the basics for a qualitative and quantitative understanding of biological and pathological phenomena, principles of physiopathology needed to practice the activity of re-educating handicaps in anomalies ocular motility and binocular vision, of re-education of handicaps in visual function deficits and to be able to conduct diagnostic instrumental ophthalmic procedures.
