Learning outcomes

The course aims to provide students with more advanced knowledge of grammatical and lexical structures in order to be proficient in the fundamental elements of the standard language (oral and written) for interacting in a number of communicative situations. Some aspects of Swahili verbal and musical culture will also be presented.

Course contents

The 40-hour course is complemented by a 20-hour tutorial. The topics will be as follows:
- Brief review of the basics
- Negative verbal conjugation, verbal marker KI, subjunctive, quantifier OTE, monosyllabic verbs, pluraliser NI, irregular imperative, reference O, locative copula, numerals, relative verbs
- Swahili calendar, dates and times
- Swahili proverbs and stories
- Overview of Swahili music genres

Lectures and tutorials.

Assessment methods

The assessment of learning takes place through a 90-minute final written test and a subsequent oral test lasting an average of 15 minutes. The written test aims to ascertain the skills acquired during the course, and will consist of several grammar exercises of completion and multiple choice, short sentences from Swahili, and a short composition in the language. The use of books, notebooks, notes, dictionaries and/or computer media is not permitted. The oral test consists of a review of the written assignment, a discussion on the cultural contents of the syllabus and a short conversation in Swahili. All information on the examination and the evaluation grid will be given in the last lessons.
