Learning outcomes

Investigate the ethical considerations surrounding the use of placebos and nocebos in clinical practice and research. Pursue innovative thinking and problem-solving skills through practical case studies and group projects and debates. Foster critical analysis of placebo-controlled clinical trials and their implications for evidence-based medicine.

Course contents

  • Placebo and placebo effect, nocebo and nocebo effect in pharmacology: definitions, overlapping, differences.
  • Factors impacting on placebo and nocebo effect of medicines.
  • Role of placebo in clinical trials: scientific, regulatory and ethical aspects.
