Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide an adequate knowledge of the history of the process of European integration. At the end of the course the student knows the causes and contents that gave life to the European Communities; use the tools suitable for a historical perspective analysis of the European Union's external relations through trade instruments, conditionality and systemic alliances.
Course contents
This is an advanced course in the history of European integration; the aim is to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of the history of European integration in order to understand the complex interweaving of national histories and the international system that underlies the integration process.
The main common institutions and policies will also be analysed in their diachronic development; invitations to officials will provide in-depth and direct, professionalising knowledge.
The initial module reconstructs the European integration process and focuses on the historiographical debate. The seminar module provides an in-depth study of the Community's external relations, from 1957 to the birth of the EU, which is essential to fully understand the international role of the EEC/EU and the relationship between internal and external policies. A first reflection will be on the relationship between history and European and the construction of a common memory and how much this has changed especially following the great enlargement of 2004-2007. The theme of the external dimension of the European Community and its profound changes, how it came into being with the Treaties of Rome and how its influence on the politics and economy of third countries has grown; the evolution of the Community's place in the international system; the fundamental role of policies in relations with third countries, of which the common agricultural policy in particular will be explored, in relation to the topics of cooperation, enlargement and food security.
