Learning outcomes
The course is an introduction to the study of archival documents and descriptions in view of their computerization. On the one hand, questions about the standards in use for description will be posed; on the other hand, problems with conservation and preservation will be faced. Special attention will be dedicated to the creation of open access environments for the copying of digital documents and accompanying descriptions in the sector of historical archives.
Course contents
An introduction to the fundamental principles of general and special archival science is planned, aimed at understanding the basic requirements for designing digital document systems. The main national and local archival information systems will be illustrated and used. Furthermore, meetings in archives are planned, where possible, to deepen practical cases of applying IT tools to the description and management of archival documentation. Finally, the regulatory and institutional aspects concerning the production, management, and preservation of digital documentation in Italy will be addressed.
