from Mar 04, 2025 to Jun 04, 2025
Learning outcomes
The laboratory activities will aim to develop the ability to operate a plant ensuring its proper management through experiences focused on the use of handling equipment, industrial measurement instruments, separation and heat exchange apparatus, and equipment for the treatment of gaseous effluents. Students will become familiar with virtual study environments of a chemical process through various platforms, including ASPEN.
Course contents
- Exercises on the UNICHIM regulations for the representation of chemical plants. •
- Exercise on fluid motion, evaluation of the power required for handling devices. Numerical solution using spreadsheets.
- Experimental evaluation of the error induced by the use of flow meters for liquid and gas phases. Assembly of centrifugal and volumetric pumps.
- Exercises on heat exchange equipment. Numerical solution using spreadsheets and comparison with experimental data collected during laboratory sessions.
- Analysis of flash, continuous, and batch distillation separation processes. Numerical solution using spreadsheets and comparison with experimental data collected during laboratory sessions.
- Analysis of separation/stripping processes. Numerical solution using spreadsheets and comparison with experimental data collected during laboratory sessions.
- Analysis of the sedimentation separation process. Numerical solution using spreadsheets and comparison with experimental data collected during laboratory sessions.
- Using the ASPEN platform for the analysis and modeling of a chemical process.
Teaching methods
The practical exercises will be conducted in the laboratory, and the analysis of the acquired data will be discussed in the classroom according to the official schedule. In the second module, the lessons will take place in the computer labs for the use of the ASPEN platform for chemical process simulation.
Assessment methods
The assessment of learning is done through a presentation of the results at the end of the laboratory experiments via an oral presentation of the findings.
Teaching tools
The educational material useful for exam preparation is made available to students in electronic format via the internet. To access the educational material, students need to connect to the website: https://virtuale.unibo.it/ . The username and password are reserved for students enrolled at the University of Bologna and will be provided by the instructor.
