Learning outcomes
The teaching aims to provide knowledge about the main chemical, physical, thermal, and mechanical properties of macromolecules. Students will acquire skills related to the structure-property correlations of polymeric materials.
Course contents
Prerequisites: Students enrolling in this course are required to have a fundamental understanding of organic chemistry and polymer chemistry. The course curriculum is structured around the following topics:
• Review of different classifications of polymeric materials
• Solid-state morphology
• Thermal transitions in polymeric materials (Glass transition, crystallization, melting)
• Characterization of thermal properties of polymers
- Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)
- Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)
• Characterization of mechanical properties of polymers
- Stress-strain measurements
- Creep
- Stress relaxation
- Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analysis (DMTA)
• Thermoplastics
• Thermosetting polymers
• Elastomers
• Bioplastics and recyclingReadings/Bibliography
The use of lecture notes will be fundamental. The PowerPoint presentations shown by the instructor in the classroom will be available on the website: https://virtuale.unibo.it/. Additional readings for further exploration are:
Tecniche di Caratterizzazione dei Polimeri a cura di S. Vicini, E. Princi – (2013) – Edizioni Nuova Cultura
Biopolimeri a cura di M. Alloisio – (2013) – Edizioni Nuova Cultura
Riutilizzo dei Materiali Polimerici a cura di M.B. Coltelli, M. Aglietto – (2015) – Edizioni Nuova Cultura
Teaching methods
In-class lectures with the presentation of educational materials. Although attendance is not mandatory, it is necessary to grasp the fundamental critical aspects of the subject and the connections between different parts of the curriculum.
Assessment methods
The assessment of learning takes place through the final oral examination only. The exam, which lasts about 40 minutes, will assess the student's acquired knowledge, their ability to use appropriate technical-scientific language, and their understanding of the topics covered.
Teaching tools
The course is conducted through in-class lectures with the recording of the lessons using Panopto. When necessary, innovative hybrid teaching methods will also be activated. All the educational materials presented are accessible to students on the educational platform https://virtuale.unibo.it/ .
