Learning outcomes
Students learn advanced fluid mechanics with applications in aerodynamics, compressible hydromechanics and turbulence mixing, and related experimental methods including ultrasound and optical velocimetry for the investigation of fluid flow

Teaching methods
This course supports the University's didactic innovation project which provides a blended format of face-to-face and remote classes.
Remote classes will be aimed at developing and clarifying the fundamental choices for an effective hybrid modeling (i.e., mathematical / experimental) in fluid mechanics. This will be achieved through some practical activities in presence accompanied by on-line analysis and modeling in a typical "LABORATORY HANDS-ON" approach. This will be preparatory to the final exam.
These activities are:
1. Exercises aimed at graphically visualizig and parameterizing the variables of interest (e.g., velocity and pressure fields, current lines, potential isolines, velocity profiles and boundary layer parameters) and for the analysis of experimental data (PTV, PIV, LDA, UVP, ADV) with the help of Matlab scripts made available by the teacher
2. Hands-on activity at the Hydraulic Engineering Lab. of the University of Bologna aimed at exemplifying the experimental methods covered in the course and collecting UVP and ADV data to be applied in the proposed assignments
Students groups (supervised by teacher and the laboratory staff) will measure the flow field around a rigid body and close to rough/wavy boundary to be critically compared to anlytical results. The experimental data analysis will also take place online; to this end, Matlab scripts, figures and videos will be provided on https://virtuale.unibo.it/
ThIs course contributes to the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In particular, the Objectives:
4 - Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all
10 - Reduce inequality within and among countries
in fact, they are pursued by stimulating collaboration between students divided into heterogeneous groups by origin and background. The group report will concour to the final evaluation.
The theoretical part will be presented in face-to-face lessons. This will include the development of graphic examples on the blackboard, and the using of projected slides that will be made available in electronic format.
Assessment methods
Students groups will present and discuss online with the teacher a written document in a form of peer to peer collaboration. This will describe the laboratory and modeling activities and the results obtained, highlighting difficulties, advantages and limitations of the different approaches. This discussion will lead to the final evaluation.
Before the oral exam session, the final paper will be delivered, which incorporates the peer to peer discussion and which summarizes: objectives, methods and results of the proposed assignments during the course. This paper will be presented and discussed during the axamination using Power Point. The final evaluation will be on group paper and the personal presentation / discussion given by each candidate.
