Learning outcomes
The course aims to offer a historical reconstruction of migratory movements in the Mediterranean area since the 20th century, tracing its quantitative dimension and its evolution, the policies adopted by the European powers in managing the phenomenon and the socio-political debate that characterized the historical period under examination. At the end of the course, the student is able to recognize the transformations of the migratory phenomenon in the Mediterranean; is able to understand the reasons for rooting in the territory; is also able to investigate the political decisions for managing the phenomenon and their impact on the Mediterranean area.
Course contents
Students will first address the history of migratory processes that, during the 20th century, have characterized socio-cultural as well as economic and political aspects of the countries bordering the Mediterranean.
After a general introduction that provides motivation for why human mobility has been and continues to be of great importance for the history of the Mediterranean area, we will focus on some phenomena that have characterized the period in a more marked way.
Among these, we will mention colonial emigration from Europe to the African continent; return migrations; migratory flows of political and militant participation, as in the case of the Spanish Civil War or the fascists scouting the post-revolutionary USSR; the many mobilities along the Italian' eastern border.
Subsequently, the focus will be placed more stringently on the relations between the European shore of the Mediterranean and the North African coasts in the last 30 years of the 20th century. Here too, there will be case studies on which to focus attention. Among these, the relationship between Italy and Libya remains emblematic. A history of colonialism was followed by decades of tensions and complex diplomatic relations, culminating in the reversal of the balance when Italy became a country of arrival and, above all, of transit for those who chose to move their lives to Europe. The direction of meaning or the key to understanding the path is to highlight how, with the correct tools of the historian, a comparative analysis of the different phenomena can be made.
