Learning outcomes

At the end of the module the student possesses the knowledge relating to taking care of the person/family in the context of priority health problems in the surgical area. Identifies, plans and evaluates healthcare interventions and collaborates with other professional figures in diagnostic-therapeutic paths.

-INTRODUCTORY TOPICS

-The classification of surgical interventions
-THE ERAS Protocol
-Safety in the operating room and in the surgical field
-Informed consent in surgery
-Asepsis 


1. NURSING ASSISTANCE TO PERSONS SUBJECT TO DIAGNOSTIC AND INSTRUMENTAL INVESTIGATIONS, ENDOSCOPIC AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGICAL PROCEDURES

2. PERIOPERATIVE NURSING CARE

2a. Preoperative phase

-Nursing care planning in the pre-operative phase
-pre-operative nursing assessment
-Identification of healthcare problems
-Nursing interventions (with particular reference to the prevention of the main post-operative complications)
-Management of pre-operative fasting periods
-Blood tests and pre-anesthetic drugs
-Trichotomy
-Risk factors for surgical complications.

 

2b. Intra-operative phase

-Structural and care characteristics in the operating block
-Multi-professional team in the operating block
- Sterilization process
-Surgical hand washing and dressing of the surgical team
-Notes on surgical instruments

-Reception and admission of the person to the operating room
-Intraoperative nursing assessment and compilation of the Surgical Safety Checklist
-Assistance during anesthesia (general, loco-regional, local)
-Assistance during the surgical procedure.
-Assistance during the awakening phase
-Nursing care in the Recovery Room.
-Management of potential immediate post-operative complications.


2c. Post-operative phase

Planning of nursing care in the post-operative phase

-Reception and initial assessment of the operation in the surgical inpatient unit.
-Planning post-surgical care problems
-Evaluation of post-operative pain through unidimensional and multidimensional scales
-Blood transfusion
-Classification of surgical wounds.
-Purposes and dressing techniques.
-Management of surgical drains.
-Management of potential post-operative complications.
-The resignation.


3. ASSISTANCE IN THE PRE AND POST-OPERATIVE PHASE TO THE PERSON UNDERGOING intervention of:

-Gastric surgery
Management of artificial nutrition (NE – NPT)
-Intestinal surgery (colon rectum)
Management of enterostomies
-Liver and pancreatic surgery
-Lung surgery
Management of chest drainage
-Breast surgery
-Cardiac surgery
-Orthopedic surgery
Management of the patient with per-trochanteric femur fracture, hip and knee arthroplasty
