B1984 - Laboratory of surface finishing and jointing for polymeric composite materials P

Academic Year 2024/2025

  • Moduli: Massimiliano De Agostinis (Modulo 1) Elisabetta Salatelli (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Polymeric Composite (cod. 5941)

Learning outcomes

The course aims at training the student in the field of surface treatments and joining technologies for composite materials. Surface treatments can have aesthetic or functional purposes and the student at the end of the course, thanks to the study of the chemical and physical properties and the correlation, is able to identify the specific needs and requirements for the specific application of such treatments. The student gains skills in the investigation techniques of surface layers and finishes, with the aim of both evaluating their quality and predicting or interpreting their potential defects. Furthermore, the student is trained on the application of surface treatments for non-aesthetic purposes and on their analytical evaluation. Furthermore, at the end of the course, the student will be able to design and create joints, disassemblable or permanent, between elements made of composite materials and hybrid composite-metal joints.

Course contents

Relevant to joining technologies, the following topics will be covered during the course:

1. Threaded joints:

- Preload force and tightening torque

- Friction coefficients and how to measure them

- Use of inserts

- Standards

2. Adhesive joints:

- Basics of the theory of adhesion

- Selection of the adhesive

- Adhesive degradation issues: effect of temperature, humidity, fatigue, impact

3. Frictional joints:

- Interference joints between composite or metal-composite tubes: basic formulae

- Hybrid interference - adhesive joints.

As regards surface treatments, the course will present the following contents:

- Introduction and overview of the main aesthetic and functional surface treatments

- Definitions of the main paint products and components of a paint; low environmental impact paint products

- Characterization techniques for paint products before and after application (peel-off test, gridding, contact angle, etc.)

- Surface treatments to modify wettability

- Analysis of defects in the painting of a composite.

- Evaluation and interpretation of case studies of defective products or with problems related to the painting process.

Slides and lectures notes.

Teaching methods

The course content will be entirely covered by the lectures. Lectures are supported by many practical exercises, aimed at guiding the students towards the solution of practical problems, based on the tools acquired during the theoretical lectures.

The teaching methods also encompass: practical activities, visits to research and industrial laboratories, discussion with experts in the field during seminars and technical tours.

Assessment methods

Joining technologies module:

Multiple choice test.

Surface finishing module:

Passing the course will be conditional on attending at least 75% of the lessons and exercises. Attendance will be ascertained by signing an attendance sheet both at the beginning and at the end of each laboratory experience.

Teaching tools

Joining technologies module:

Tablet with hand-writing function, laboratory experience with torque tools.

Surface finishing module:

The activities carried out in the course also make use of supports such as power point presentations and videos; all the teaching material presented is accessible to students on the teaching application https://virtuale.unibo.it/.
