Learning outcomes
Students who complete this course will have gained knowledge of the key concepts, issues and methods in the study of music from an anthropological point of view. On successful completion of this course a student will be able to: acquire an in-depth knowledge of specific musical practices and traditions; assess the role of music in public and private ritual contexts; analyse the forms, structures and meanings of music, as well as the musical instruments in the contexts examined; develop skills in critically analysing audiovisual materials and sources of different types; deepen some issues related to fieldwork.
Course contents
The program focuses on the relationship between music, ritual, and gender identity in Morocco and in the broader cultural contexts of the Maghreb. The course draws on historical, ethnographic, and ethnomusicological sources to provide an overview of the cult of saints, religious brotherhoods, and the cults and rites of spirit possession. Particular attention is given to female ritual and musical practices, poetic repertoires, and the relationships between music and gender identity.

Teaching methods
Lecturing supported by audio and video materials.
Assessment methods
The exam consists of an oral interview aimed at assessing the student's critical and methodological skills. The evaluation takes into account detailed knowledge of the volumes' content, language proficiency, the ability to establish connections between different parts of the program, and critical argumentation skills.
Solid knowledge, a well-structured discourse, appropriate language use, and the ability to make connections between the contents of the books will lead to an excellent final grade.
Complete and adequate knowledge, clearly articulated and correctly expressed, will be evaluated as very good.
More than satisfactory knowledge, expressed in correct language, will be evaluated as good.
Essential knowledge, inconsistent expression, and poorly articulated discourse will be considered sufficient.
Superficial knowledge, inappropriate expressions, and significant gaps in discourse articulation will be evaluated as barely adequate/poor.
The test is insufficient when the student does not demonstrate adequate mastery of the "knowledge and skills to be acquired" indicated as course objectives, uses inappropriate language, and lacks orientation in the discipline.
