Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student will know the historical development of classical philological studies; s/he will know how to reconstruct the main theoretical and methodological junctions in the history of the discipline; s/he will know the most significant scholars in relation to their historical and cultural context.

Course contents

1) The main events of the classical tradition in Western history will be traced, considering the transmission of texts and the history of material supports in relation to the reception of ancient authors, starting from the activities of the Alexandrian philologists up to the present day.

2) Various aspects of the textual history of Epicurus will be explored: the tradition of Περὶ φύσεως, from the presence of copies of some books among the papyri in the library of Herculaneum to the most recent editions that benefit from increasingly sophisticated technological tools for text reading; the tradition of his letters, both the major ones preserved by Diogenes Laertius and those that have come down to us in fragments. Passages from Περὶ φύσεως and the Letters will be read and analyzed.

Teaching methods

Lectures in class; seminars and discussion of the texts analysed in class.

Assessment methods

The oral examination will be an interview in which the teacher, through a series of questions, will test the theoretical knowledge as explained during the lectures. The evaluation ranges from 18 to 30 cum laude depending on how sure, well-founded, precise, and rigorous the answers of the candidate will be.
