Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student is skilled at light microscope use. In particular, the student is able to recognize and classify the human tissues.
Course contents
Principles of optical microscopy. Distinctive features and classification elements of : coating epitheliums, exocrine and endocrine epithelia, connective tissues, blood and lymphoid tissues, cartilaginous, adipose, bone, muscle and nervous tissues.
In the laboratory, the student independently observes histological sections by the optical microscope. The teacher is in the laboratory to support the students.
Readings/Bibliography
Any atlas of histology is suitable to integrate the concepts transmitted by the teachers.
Teaching methods
In the classroom, the projection of histological preparations aims to teach the strategies of recognition and classification of normal human tissues.
Individual practical activity is planned in the laboratory. It aims to provide each student with the opportunity to become familiar with the use of an optical microscope and to develop the individual skills for tissue recognition. Different methods could be used in case of COVID-19 restrictions.
As concerns the teaching methods of this course unit, all students must attend Module 1, 2 on Health and Safety online [https://www.unibo.it/en/services-and-opportunities/health-and-assistance/health-and-safety/online-course-on-health-and-safety-in-study-and-internship-areas]
Assessment methods
The final exam is practical and carried out in the laboratory.
The assessment of the histological skills is carried out with the aid of an optical microscope and consists in the recognition and classification of the tissues present in three histological slides.
The description of the elements that have determined the recognition and classification of the tissues is required.
Teaching tools
Mono and binocular optical microscopes, 5-head s optical microscope for groups of students, optical microscope connected to a 60" screen. Virtual histological slides are available online at:
