Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student knows the different types and designs of biomedical studies, the main methods of descriptive and inferential statistical analysis, and possesses the essential tools for a critical interpretation and reading of the scientific literature as well as the data to support healthcare management and planning.
Course contents
Taxonomy of biomedical studies (experimental and observational) and main designs (cohort, case-control, cross-sectional).
The different types of data and related summary measures and graphical representation (descriptive statistical analysis methods).
Introduction to the concept of statistical inference (estimation theory and significance testing). Point and interval estimation, main hypothesis tests.
Main occurrence and effect measures used in the biomedical and healthcare fields and relationship with study design and statistical analysis methods.
Concepts related to sample size calculation.
Critical reading of scientific articles.
