98733 - ELEMENTS OF ELECTRIC POWER SYSTEMS AND SMART GRIDS

Academic Year 2024/2025

  • Docente: Fabio Tossani
  • Credits: 3
  • SSD: ING-IND/33
  • Language: English
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Greening Energy Market and Finance (cod. 5885)

Learning outcomes

The module provides the basics for understanding the main aspects of modern power systems/smart grids structure and operation, with particular reference to the electricity distribution network. At the end of the course students are able to understand the main technical problems relevant to the distribution of electric energy in modern smart cities with particular reference to renewable sources integration.

Course contents

The course is divided into two parts (one given by Prof. C.A. Nucci and the other given by Prof. F. Tossani):

1. Structure of the electrical systems and its evolution from the origins to the modern smart grid. Main key technical issues relevant to the operation and control of modern electric power systems able to supply smart cities including energy communities and ground transportation (by Prof. F. Tossani).

2. Renewables integration in the Electric Power System and relevant technical issues. Smart grids: main technical features. Smart Cities: definition and relevant sub-systems. The EU Mission 'Climate Neutral and Smart Cities". The Smart Grid as the main enabler for the implementation of the Smart City paradigm. Energy Communities (by Prof. C.A. Nucci).

Module 1:

Recall of 3-phase power networks and nodal analysis

Load flow calculations

Power system network constraints

Introduction to electricity markets

Readings/Bibliography

Lecture notes and teaching materials (https://virtuale.unibo.it).

Teaching methods

Theory lectures and laboratory exercises.

Assessment methods

Oral closed-book final exam (exam schedules at https://almaesami.unibo.it).

The final grade is defined on the basis of the partial grades reported for both Modules after answering some specific questions on topics related to the contents of the course.

No intermediate/partial tests are foreseen.
