Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will know the general characteristics of microorganisms and the main analytical techniques for their detection in environmental and biological matrices.
Course contents
Main characteristics of bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses
Microbial pathogenesis and host defense
Transmission routes of pathogens
Diagnosis of bacterial, viral and fungal infection. Immunological assays
Antimicrobial drugs: action and resistance mechanisms of antibiotics
Most relevant bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses pathogenic for humans
The ongoing coronavirus pandemic: SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19
Environmental microbiological monitoring

Teaching methods
In-class lectures will be supported by video projector and PC.
Assessment methods
The final oral examination will evaluate whether the students have mastered the above listed skills and have reached the teaching objectives.
