Learning outcomes
Analysis of data measurements and uncertainties through statistics and probability; uncertainty propagation and use of the International System of Units.
Presentation of the main environmental problems in relation to the activities and their causes; identification of their relevance on the basis of environmental quality reports issued by competent authorities; main units for quantifying emissions and environmental quality.
Basics of use of Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD).
Course contents
Prerequisites/recommended knowledge
The student who accesses this teaching knows and knows how to use the basics of algebra, mathematical analysis, chemistry and computer science.
Plan
The course is divided into 4 modules of 15 hours each, which provide the theoretical and practical bases on data processing in the field of Environmental Engineering.
In particular:
Module 1 (Teacher: prof. Francesco Tinti)
Theory and practice of data processing with statistical and probabilistic methods.
- Introduction to the use of the spreadsheet for data processing;
- Elementary statistics;
- Multivariate statistics;
- Basics of probability and distribution functions;
- Measurements and units;
- Introduction to the theory of errors.
Each lesson will be integrated by practical exercises using spreadsheets.
Module 2 (Teacher: prof. Fabiola Amaducci)
Introduction to environmental protection issues. Data in Environmental Engineering applications: elements related to their acquisition and their use.
Determination of the physical state of a polluting flow.
Calculation of vapor pressure and boiling temperature.
Calculation of the density of substances in the liquid and vapor state.
Calculation of the volumetric, mass and molar flow rate of liquid and gas streams.
Calculations related to the composition of liquid and gas streams (molar, volumetric and mass fractions; concentrations).
Introduction to mass balance.
Module 3 (Teacher: prof. Stefano Bonduà)
Concepts of raster and vector graphics. CAD systems. Geometric primitives, data entry, most common commands, layers, blocks, dimensioning, raster images, printing. Cross sections of simple and complex shapes. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional raster representation of environmental variables. Visualization and contour lines. Isosurfaces. Cross-sections. Graphic file formats.
Module 4 (Teacher: prof. Elena Ferretti)
Basic concepts of graphic statics and introduction to the inertial properties of plane figures.
Readings/Bibliography
Modules 1, 2 and 4:
Powerpoint slides.
Module 3:
QGIS user guide;
Autocad user guide.
Teaching methods
The lessons will be traditional, with demonstrations carried out on the blackboard, and exercises on the covered topics covered.
Module 1:
Lectures and laboratory exercises with the aid of spreadsheets.
Modules 2 and 4:
Lectures and classroom exercises.
Module 3:
Lectures and laboratory exercises with the aid of CAD.
Assessment methods
The assessment related to modules 1 and 2 consists in a multiple choice test, carried out on the EOL platform, which will consist mainly in practical exercises, aimed to verify the learning of the basics provided during the course. This written test provides an overall suitability relating to modules 1 and 2.
The assessment related to the module 3 consists in the presentation of the graphic works realized by the student during the training in the computer laboratory. All exercises carried out in the laboratory are subject to evaluation. In case of incompleteness of the exercises, a new dedicated graphic work will be asked
The assessment method related to module 4 consists in a multiple choice test on the topics covered during the course, to be carried out on the calculator.
The exam will be considered passed if all the tests will be all assessed as sufficient.
Teaching tools
The presentations related to each module will be made available on Virtuale before the corresponding lesson.
For modules 1 and 3, in support of the frontal lessons, a computer laboratory is available where students can practice on the various topics covered.
Practical training is planned with the teacher support.Links to further information
