Learning outcomes
At the end of the course unit, students know the most important aspects of statistics from the methodological and operational point of view. In particular, students are capable to: - synthesize information in statistical distributions and graphs; - select and calculate the most consistent average values and measures of variability in the light of specific problems concerning given phenomena; - measure the intensity of the relationship between characters, even where they are of different nature.
Course contents
First section - Exploratory statistics
Classification of statistical variables. Data representation. Statistical rates and ratios. Mean values. Variability and concentration. Linear regression and correlation.
Second section - Elements of probability
Events and logical operators. Combinatorics. Basic probability. Conditional probability and independence. Bayes Formula. Binomial random variable. Gaussian distribution.
Third section - Statistical Inference
Population and sample. Statistics and estimators. Confidence intervals for a frequency. Performing a statistical test. Hypothesis testing on frequencies. Test for checking the value of a mean.
Fourth section - Sampling Methods
Sampling plan and sampling strategy. Simple Random Sampling (SRS). Stratified sampling. Cluster sampling.

Teaching methods
Front lessons. In very special situations, a lesson can be taken online.
Assessment methods
The final exam will consist in an oral interview of approximately 20 minuts, referring to all of the course topics, even with numerical examples.
- Evaluation scale:
30 e lode (A+) =excellent
29 - 30 (A) = very good
27 - 28 (B+) = good
25 - 26 (B) = fairly good
22 - 24 (C) = more than sufficient
20 - 21 (D) = sufficient
18 - 19 (E) = just sufficient
Teaching tools
Teaching sheets written in English language (created in Power Point) will be provided on the web Virtuale.unibo platform.
The first part of the slides is also available in Spanish language.
