- Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Electrical Energy Engineering (cod. 9066)
-
from Feb 17, 2025 to Apr 15, 2025
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student knows the basic properties of the dielectrics and the physical mechanisms leading to the breakdown of insulating system composed of either gaseous, liquid, or solid dielectrics or a combination of them. He also knows the weak points of insulation system and how to avoid them in the design phase and through a qualification procedures.
Course contents
- Electrodes (coaxial cylinders and concentric spheres, point/plane electrodes, emission of electrons from metal electrodes). Carbon black,
- Conduction mechanisms in dielectrics.
- Polarization and dielectric response.
- Discharges in gases (ionization and attachment coefficients, discharges in uniform field, Paschen's law, discharges in divergent fields, streamer inception criterion)
- Breakdown of liquid dielectrics: discharges in uniform and divergent electrical fields.
- Breakdown of solid dielectrics (intrinsic breakdown, electro-mechanical breakdown, thermal runaway, tracking)
- Grading systems
- Interfaces
- Partial discharges: physics, treeing.
