Course contents
The mutualist social design
The workshop aims to promote reflection and discussion on the practice of social design carried out according to a collaborative type perspective and based on the solidarity exchange between social actors involved in transformative processes. Social design from a technical-methodological perspective and more generally from a political and cultural perspective, in the search for innovative answers to the complex social problems that cross our communities, must consider the current affirmation of selfish type cultures and the fragmentation of social ties. The workshop presents social design according to the mutualist approach, in particular we consider both the methodological aspect used to counter with current forms of social distress according to the principles of self-determination of individuals and communities; and the theoretical and policy dimensions, particularly with regard to the construction of a welfare of the commons in order to guarantee social rights in a universalist sense and contribute to the construction of communities for the care of self, others, and the planet. The intention is to develop reflection on the characteristics and qualities of this approach and also to dwell on the difficulties in sustaining and managing the social processes necessary to build collaboration and participation.
According to the mutualistic approach, the figure of the planner is configured as a researcher, animator and facilitator and the technical skills used in the conception, activation and implementation of social interventions must be integrated with the skills necessary to build and co-manage collective spaces and shared organizations, within which cooperative-type projects are implemented. In addition, the designer, given the process of rewriting the welfare system and the characteristics of current social policies, must be able to respond to the demand for innovation in the practices and methodologies of social-educational services and interventions.
The will be covered the following topics:
-
social design in local dynamics and global changes
-
cooperative strategies, critical thinking and transformative processes
-
emotional, relational, organizational aspects and conflict management
-
social design as a form of collective writing
-
participatory approach and community development
-
cooperative tools and techniques. The example of the “mutualist circle” and open space technology

Teaching methods
The workshop is designed to test from one's own study and/or work experiences through group exercises to develop reflections and elaborations on the topics covered in the workshop. The following training tools will be used: discussions, case-centered simulations, discussion with significant witnesses, Open Space Technology (simulation). The exercises cover the following topics: urban peripheries and adolescent groups, building relationships and defining socio-educational interventions in informal contexts; design as collective writing; starting with Roma and Sinti communities, strategies for deconstructing stigmatizing representations; health promotion and equity, working with communities and participatory action research; the example of prison; social distress and fragility as a basis for social and cultural change. Referring to the prison theme, group reflections and discussion with the experiences of significant witnesses will be used to experiment with a cooperative design process through the use of Open Space Technology.
