Learning outcomes
The course offers a quantitative description of the equations that govern fluid motion. At the end of the lectures the student is able to understand the basic phenomenology of fluid dynamics and use the learned models to solve problems relevant to Aerospace Engineering.
Course contents
Introduction to fluid properties. Pressure, viscosity, surface tension and capillarity. Non-Newtonian behaviour. Statics of fluids. Dimensional analisis. Introduction to tensorial analysis. Eulerian/Lagragian description. Reynolds transport theorem. Conservation of Mass. Conservation of Momentum. Conservation of Energy. Constitutive relations for Newtonian and non Newtonian fluids. Entropy balance. System of equations for fluid mechanics. Non dimensional parameters. Finite difference methods for convection-diffusion. Natural and forced convection. High Reynolds number flows. Euler equations. Irrotational flows: vorticity and circulation. Introduction to potential flows and boundary layer.
Readings/Bibliography
Lecture notes given during the lectures and available online.
Fluid Mechanics, Yunus A. Cengel, John M. Cimbala
Fluid Mechanics, Pijush K. Kundu, Ira M. Cohen
Teaching methods
Contact lessons at the board and with slides.
Assessment methods
The learning outcomes are verified through a final assessment which evaluates the competencies. It consists of a written examination (based on two successive tests) and an oral discussion of the previous written tests. The discussion is compulsory.
Teaching tools
LCD projector, overhead projector and PC are used in addition to the standard blackboard.
