Learning outcomes
At the end of the seminar (an activity closely related to the objectives of the degree course) the student acquires specific skills and knowledge to deal with the preparation of the master thesis, including methodological and technical issues and problems of geographical representation.
Course contents
The seminars (in Italian) will provide an opportunity to learn theoretical aspects and practical skills on the preparation of a Master's thesis with a particular focus on geographical research methodologies. In the seminars will address the methods, difficulties, and challenges of working effectively on the various parts of the thesis:
- the search for the right topic and research question
- the search for geographical theory and literature and the writing of a literature framework
- the research methodologies and empirical work for the
field research, methods and ways of doing research online, or in a
creative way
- ethics and positionality
- presenting one's research
- what are the possibilities and trajectories for master's degree graduates in geography and spatial processes?
The course is conceptually divided into two parts: after an initial
introductory part, there will be will be seminars in which the geography lecturers of the course of study and some external guests will present specific case studies related to the topics of the seminars.
Teaching methods
Lectures and seminars.
Assessment methods
Each seminar is worth 0.5 CFU, therefore, in order to obtain recognition of the 6 cfu of the "Seminars" teaching activity, students must attend no less than 12 meetings from among those offered here or also meetings offered by other degree courses of the University, subject to authorisation from Prof. Martini.
The seminars will be held in mixed mode, either in the Aula di Geografia in Via Guerazzi 20 or online. For each seminar, attendance will be checked: students present in the lecture room must obtain the signature of the lecturer present in the room on the "Seminar attendance form", which can be found among the course materials on Virtuale.unibo.it; for students attending online, screenshots will be taken of those present in order to verify actual attendance.
For the evaluation of the "Seminar" didactic activity and the recognition of eligibility, students must prepare a short research proposal - of approximately 20,000 characters - in which they reflect on an initial idea for the thesis, in its various parts: research question, literature, methods, ethics, also including a bibliography.
This thesis must be sent to Prof. Martini by e-mail, who will assess it and, in the event of a favourable outcome, record the suitability of the activity.
