Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student deepens and completes his or her intermediate level skills in the Neo-Persian language; he or she is able to delve into the relevant literature and related issues, referring to the most up-to-date bibliography.

Course contents

The course is divided into two parts: a linguistic part (first part of the course) and a literary part (second part). In the latter, ample space will be given to the reading and analysis of original Persian texts.


1. Linguistic part
During the first part of the course, each lesson will include grammatical and syntactic analysis, exercises and conversation.
- The grammar study will focus on the following topics in particular: morphology and use of simple and compound verb tenses, causative and passive forms, use of the indicative and subjunctive, period syntax (coordinated and subordinate clauses).
- The learning of grammar will be consolidated through exercises in reading, translation and analysis of texts, in particular contemporary prose.
Another fixed part of the lessons will be devoted to interactive conversation with a communicative-situational approach, privileging the register of the language spoken in Iran today. On one or two occasions, this part will include listening to Persian music, preceded by the reading and translation of the relevant texts.

2. Literary part
During the second part of the course, the theme of the spiritual journey from Sanā'i (12th cent.) and Bardasiri (13th-14th cent.) to Iqbāl Lāhuri (20th cent.) and Sohrāb Sepehri (20th cent.) will be explored in depth, focusing on the strand of otherworldly journeys in Persian literature. The reading and analysis of simple excerpts from some of the works dealt with are also planned, the literary (structure, motifs, images, rhetoric, etc.) and linguistic (grammatical and stylistic analysis of the text) aspects of which will be studied.

Lectures, language exercises, listening to musical texts, possible seminars related to the Iranian studies.

Assessment methods

A student who attends at least 75% of the lessons is considered to be attending.

This course (6 CFU) is a component of the Integrated Course ‘Persian Language and Literature 2B (C.I.) LM’. If the student has the Integrated Course (12 CFU) in the study plan, the final mark will be the arithmetic mean of the marks obtained in the two components.

The Persian Language and Literature 2B/Persian2B exam will be written (a translation from Persian into Italian) and oral (literary part and a small linguistic part). The final mark will be the average of the marks obtained in the two tests.

The student's achievement of the ability to comment comprehensively on the selected texts, both linguistically and historically, and to express an organic vision of the themes addressed in the lessons with a good mastery of expression and specific language will be assessed with marks of excellence.

A mnemonic knowledge of the subject, together with skills of synthesis and analysis articulated in a correct but not always appropriate language, will lead to fair marks.

Formative deficiencies and/or inappropriate language - albeit in the context of minimal knowledge of the examination material - will lead to grades that do not exceed sufficiency.

Formative deficiencies, inappropriate language, lack of orientation within the bibliographical materials offered during the course will lead to negative marks.
