Learning outcomes

Knowledge and Applied Skills in Abdominal Ultrasound:

The student will be able to differentiate between normal and pathological abdominal findings by personally performing an ultrasound examination.

Knowledge and Understanding of Interventional Procedures:

The student will understand when interventional procedures are indicated, how they are performed, and how to properly prepare the patient. They will also be able to support and perform basic procedures such as thoracentesis, paracentesis, and venous access.

Course contents

The program below integrates the 3 CFU credits of Prof. Piscaglia, Prof. Granito, and Dr. Tovoli, and corresponds to the entire integrated course, including this module and the other two.

Attendance for the entire course is mandatory. Eligibility will be granted upon passing the multiple-choice test at the end of the course.

MODULE 1 - Coordinator: Prof. Piscaglia

First Day - Wednesday, February 12: 1:00 PM - 7:30 PM

1:00 PM - Introduction
1:05 PM - Physical and technological principles of ultrasound
1:50 PM - Ultrasound semantics
2:35 PM - Attendance check
2:50 PM - Performing an abdominal ultrasound and normal liver anatomy via ultrasound
3:30 PM - Break
3:45 PM - Ultrasound semiotics of normal kidneys and urinary tract and their pathological conditions
4:35 PM - Ultrasound semiotics of gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, and their pathological conditions
5:15 PM - Attendance check
5:30 PM onwards - Practical session, group 1.

Practical sessions will be conducted in small groups (5 students per station) at the ultrasound clinic of the Internal Medicine Unit, Piscaglia, Building 2, Floor 1.

1:00 PM - Physical and technological principles of Doppler method and principles of hemodynamics
1:30 PM - Contrast-enhanced ultrasound: physical principles and applications + video
2:30 PM - Ultrasound semiotics of liver diseases
3:00 PM - Attendance check and break
3:30 PM - Ultrasound semiotics of the spleen and abdominal lymph nodes and their pathologies
4:10 PM - Benign primary tumors: clinical and ultrasound aspects of angioma, focal nodular hyperplasia, and adenoma
4:45 PM - Abdominal aorta
5:10 PM - Doppler ultrasound in portal hypertension
5:40 PM - Attendance check

5:50 PM - 7:20 PM - Practical session, group 2.

Practical sessions will be conducted in small groups (5 students per station) at the ultrasound clinic of the Internal Medicine Unit, Piscaglia, Building 2, Floor 1.

2:15 PM - Malignant primary tumors: clinical aspects (risk factors, surveillance, etc.) and imaging of hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma
3:00 PM - Liver biopsy: indications, procedure technique, and practical demonstration of liver biopsy materials
3:50 PM - Ultrasound of the thyroid and overview of thyroid biopsies
4:30 PM - Break
5:00 PM - Staging, diagnosis, and therapeutic management of hepatocellular carcinoma
5:50 PM - Ultrasound videos of the liver and interventional procedures
6:20 PM - Overview of venous and arterial Doppler ultrasound of the lower limbs
7:00 PM - Attendance check

6:15 PM - 7:15 PM - Practical session, group 2.

Practical sessions will be conducted in small groups (5 students per station) at the ultrasound clinic of the Internal Medicine Unit, Piscaglia, Building 2, Floor 1.
