Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will know: 1. traditional and molecular methods in order to study the intestinal microbiota 2. up-to-date knowledge of microbial ecology 3. knowledge of changes induced by microbiota on intestinal mucosa during acute and late phase of infection/disease; 4. role of the microbiota in inflammatory bowel diseases, in cancer, irritable bowelsyndrome, pediatric allergies, obesity and diabetes etc.
Course contents
Traditional and innovative molecular methods in order to study the intestinal microbiota;
Microbial ecology and evolution during the life and in both physiological and pathological conditions.
Changes induced by microbiota on intestinal mucosa during acute and late phase of infection/disease;
Role of the microbiota in inflammatory bowel diseases, cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, pediatric allergies, obesity and diabetes etc.
Readings/Bibliography
It is not required to purchase specific texts. Most of slides will be available online at the end of the course
Teaching methods
In-class lectures will be supported by video projector and PC.
Assessment methods
The examination will evaluate whether the students have mastered the above listed skills and have reached the teaching objectives. The final vote is defined by multiple-choice tests.
