from Sep 19, 2024 to Dec 20, 2024
Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to give students a complete overview on the main classes of organic materials, with particular relevance to their preparation, their properties and to their applications. Competences will be acquired also in the field of biomaterials (proteins, carbohydrates, etc.). In particular, students will be able to understand the connections between the chemical structure and the technological peculiarities of the most important organic materials (dyes and pigments, luminescent and photochromic materials, organic electronics, liquid crystals, antioxidants, cellulosic materials) and to evaluate the possible applications.

Readings/Bibliography
Theoric lessons
J. Clayden, N. Greeves, S. Warren. Edizione Italiana sulla seconda lingua inglese. Piccin-Nuova Libreria. 2023.
Teaching methods
Theoric lessons will be combined with exercises to apply the concepts explained.
The main objective is to focus on the principal functional groups present in a complex organic molecule, and to design a possible multistep synthesis for material's chemistry applications.
Two laboratories will be dedicated to the synthesis of organic materials for industrial applications.Assessment methods
The final examination will determine the level reached by the student in the objectives set out in the " Learning outcomes”
The assessment of the learning consists in a 2 hours written test, without the support of books or notes but with the periodic table, followed by an oral discussion with no more then two questions.
To carry out the written exam registration is required through "Alma exams ", in respect of the mandatory deadlines.
The written test include 4 questions giving a value of 9 points each as clearly indicated in the text. The exercises consist in two aspects: a) the synthesis of organic molecules suitable for organic chemistry material applications, b) given a particular structure to recognize a possible application in the material's world.
T
The maximum score is therefore 36 out of 30, the honor (cum laude) is automatic after reaching 32 points.
