Learning outcomes

The course aims to analyze, from an economic perspective, the domains and objectives of public sector intervention in market economies. By the end of the course, students will possess the analytical tools necessary to analyze public spending in a comparative perspective across European countries.

Course contents

The course is organized into three parts. The first part discusses the trends and composition of public spending in select advanced economies from a comparative perspective. The course then continues with an analysis of the nature of externalities and the challenges associated with the provision of public goods. The subsequent section describes the mechanisms of the insurance market and the redistributive role of the state. Finally, the last part of the course employs tools from economic theory to analyze the causes of criminal behavior and the effects of public deterrence policies.
